Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

What is bioidentical hormone therapy?

Bioidentical hormone therapy, or bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) refers to replacement treatments using the same forms of estrogen and progesterone that the body makes naturally makes. At the Ashford Center, Dr. Clint Ashford and Dr. Rebecca Ashford specialize in treating the problems women experience as hormone imbalances occur. They are the leading experts in the field of bioidentical hormone therapy with FDA approved, bioidentical hormone products.

What are the advantages of bioidentical hormone therapy?

Conventional hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, primarily uses synthetic, laboratory-derived hormones. Because of the mass-produced, artificial nature of the product, there are drawbacks to conventional HRT that don’t apply to bioidentical hormone therapy.

Hormones used in conventional HRT may not be biocompatible, meaning they can actually have a slightly different molecular structure from those made naturally by the body. Bioidentical hormones are refined mainly from plant sources and have an identical chemical structure as the hormones your body produces naturally, ensuring effectiveness as well as safety.

Why would I need bioidentical hormone therapy?

Bioidentical hormones are most often used to treat the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. While some women find that they experience few if any problems in the years leading up to menopause (perimenopause), the large majority of women struggle with any number of uncomfortable and distressing problems, such as:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Insomnia
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability and/or depression
  • Loss of libido
  • Weight gain, especially around the middle or torso
  • Fatigue
  • Thinning hair and dry skin
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Incontinence
  • Painful intercourse

For many women, symptoms like these can occur many years before periods stop on their own. Treatment with FDA-approved bioidentical hormones is a very effective and safe treatment when used correctly by an experienced provider.  Dr. Clint Ashford and Dr. Rebecca Ashford specialize in treatments for hormone imbalance problems using FDA approved bioidentical products.  Frequently, treatment plans may include the Advanced Endometrial Ablation procedure to gently remove the hormonal lining of the uterus before later proceeding with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.  At the Ashford Center, our goal is always to find the best and most effective treatment plan customized to the individual patient.

Would I need hormone therapy after Advanced Endometrial Ablation?

For most women, Advanced Endometrial Ablation eliminates not only painful, heavy, or irregular bleeding, but also the PMS symptoms related to hormone imbalances caused by the hormonal lining of the uterus (the endometrium).

Most of the time women do not need additional hormone adjustments after Advanced Endometrial Ablation unless they are also experiencing a decline in estrogen produced by the ovaries during physiologic menopause. Dr. Clint Ashford and Dr. Rebecca Ashford specialize in treating all types and combinations of hormonal imbalance problems during this important time in a woman’s life.   Their combined experience and expertise have earned the Ashford Center the trusted reputation it enjoys today from thousands of women across the Southeast.
