  • Clinton B. Ashford, MD, FACOG

Dr. Clint Ashford graduated from the University of Georgia with a double major in Economics and Chemistry. He subsequently earned his MD from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in Augusta, GA. He then pursued a 4-year OBGYN residency, with a special emphasis on Gyn Endocrinology, studying under two of the pioneers of the specialty, Robert Greenblatt, MD, and Paul McDonough, MD. In 1985, Dr. Ashford was further honored to become a Fellow of the American College of Ob/Gyn.

During his medical training, Dr. Ashford met the love of his life, his future wife, Rebecca, while pursuing her medical degree at MCG. Then, in 1982 after completing his residency in OBGYN, the Ashfords moved to Athens, founding the Ashford Center for Women’s and Health.

In subsequent years, Dr. Ashford delivered thousands of babies as well as caring for a busy practice in Gynecology. He was also active in a variety of research projects, especially focusing on the role of hormones and the role they play in the overall health of women, including longevity, avoidance of chronic diseases, and maintenance/restoration of normal sexual function libido. Dr. Ashford is the original investigator who developed the DECA-PMS Theory (Degrading Endometrium as the Causative Agent of PMS), postulating the role vasoactive neuropeptides released from the degrading endometrium play as the causative agents for premenstrual headaches, mood issues, fatigue, food cravings, and the like. During the last several years, the Ashford Center has focused all its attention on Perimenopausal Medicine, especially the treatment of Problem Periods with the minimally invasive, Endometrial Ablation procedure. Alleviating premenstrual headaches, mood problems, etc. is a central part of the Ashford practice. Additionally, the Ashford Center counsels women about hormone imbalances and can customize a Hormone Replacement Therapy regimen (HRT) to suit an individual woman’s specific profile.

On the personal level, the Ashfords have raised 7 children, 6 of whom are now practicing MDs. They were pioneers in the home-schooling movement in the 1980s and 1990s, and are active in their church and various Bible Study and Christian ministry activities.
