When would a hysterectomy be required?
A hysterectomy is usually the most appropriate treatment for women diagnosed with uterine cancer. If you don’t have cancer, however, a hysterectomy is the last option and should only be performed after other conservative treatments have been tried.
Many gynecologic conditions can be effectively treated without hysterectomy, such as:
- Uterine fibroids: Noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus
- Endometrial polyps: Noncancerous growths on the inner wall of the uterus
- Endometriosis: Uterine tissue that grows outside the uterus on the surface of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic structures
- Abnormal menstrual bleeding: Heavy, long, or irregular periods that interfere with a woman’s personal life or productivity at work
- Adenomyosis: Uterine lining tissue that grows into the muscular layer of the uterus
- PCOS: Cluster of symptoms related to ovarian, adrenal and pancreatic function
