Alternatives to Hysterectomy

Women with noncancerous conditions can often avoid a hysterectomy and preserve their uterus by choosing to have Advanced Endometrial Ablation. While this procedure can’t help all the conditions treated with a hysterectomy, Dr. Clint Ashford specializes in using Advanced Endometrial Ablation as an alternative to treat several gynecologic conditions.

If you’ve been told you need a hysterectomy, schedule a consultation online or by phone today to learn if minimally invasive Advanced Endometrial Ablation is the right choice for you.

Alternatives to Hysterectomy

Consult with the Ashford Center about your options to a hysterectomy.

When would a hysterectomy be required?

A hysterectomy is usually the most appropriate treatment for women diagnosed with uterine cancer. If you don’t have cancer, however, a hysterectomy is the last option and should only be performed after other conservative treatments have been tried.

Many gynecologic conditions can be effectively treated without hysterectomy, such as:

  • Uterine fibroids: Noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus
  • Endometrial polyps: Noncancerous growths on the inner wall of the uterus
  • Endometriosis: Uterine tissue that grows outside the uterus on the surface of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic structures
  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding: Heavy, long, or irregular periods that interfere with a woman’s personal life or productivity at work
  • Adenomyosis: Uterine lining tissue that grows into the muscular layer of the uterus
  • PCOS: Cluster of symptoms related to ovarian, adrenal and pancreatic function

Many of these conditions never need a hysterectomy!

What is Advanced Endometrial Ablation?

Advanced Endometrial Ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the layer of tissue lining the uterus. Dr. Clint Ashford performs Advanced Endometrial Ablation using small surgical instruments that easily pass through the cervix and into the uterus. The procedure is 100% pain-free!

A variety of techniques may be used to gently remove the endometrial cells, including:

  • Radiofrequency ablation: uses the heat produced by high-energy radio waves
  • Hydrothermal: uses heated fluids
  • Cryoablation: uses freezing temperatures

Dr. Ashford has expertise in all the different techniques, so he can choose the one that’s best for you. For example, radiofrequency ablation is often the best choice for women with normal anatomy of the uterus.

After the uterine lining is removed, you can’t get pregnant. Therefore, Advanced Endometrial Ablation is only appropriate for women when childbearing is complete.

There are alternatives to hysterectomy! If you’ve been advised to get a hysterectomy, call The Ashford Center or schedule online today to find out about alternatives.
